Meaning · English

Earth, your middle, your navel, the strengths grown from your body: set us in them, make us clean. Earth is mother, I her son; Parjanya, father, may he sustain us.

The seer asks to be placed at the Earth's centre: her middle, her navel, the strengths that grew out of her body. Strength here means the kind that feeds, the vigour that comes from food and sap. He asks her to flow over them and make them clean. Then comes the line many recite daily: Earth is mother, I am her son. Parjanya, the god of the rain-cloud, is father. His rain lets her bear. He is asked to fill them, or, as some readers take the verb, carry them through.

A seedling set deep in a clay pot, its roots in the middle of the soil, away from the dry rim. Water poured from above soaks down to reach it there. That is the placement asked for: held at the Earth's centre, where her strength gathers, with the rain-cloud's water coming down to meet it.
