The Charioteer's Reins
Shukla Yajurveda 34.6
Meaning · English
As a skilled charioteer drives swift horses by the reins, it leads people on. Set in the heart, nimble, swiftest — may that mind of mine resolve on the good.
The picture is a chariot. The mind is the driver, and people are the horses it leads. A good driver steers by the reins, and the team runs where it is guided. The mind is also called nimble and swiftest: nothing outruns it. Yet it has a home, the heart, where it is set. The refrain asks that this fast, guiding mind hold a kindly, auspicious resolve. The same word later became a name of the god Shiva, and some readers hear him in it too.
1. Sit where you can stay still, and let your attention rest at the heart, where the verse sets the mind. 2. Watch the mind move. Notice how quickly it runs from one thing to the next, faster than anything else you know. 3. When it bolts after a thought, do not chase it. Draw it back gently, the way a driver gathers the reins, and return to the heart. 4. Each time it comes back, hold one kindly intention for whatever comes next. 5. After ten minutes, say the closing line once, may this mind of mine resolve on the good, and get up.
