Spokes in the Hub

Shukla Yajurveda 34.5

Meaning · English

In it the hymns, the chants and the formulas stand like spokes in a chariot's hub; in it all the thought of beings is woven. May my mind's resolve be auspicious.

Three kinds of sacred speech are named: hymns of praise, sung chants, and the formulas spoken at the rite. Together they are the whole Veda. All three rest in the mind the way spokes rest in a wheel's hub, and without the hub they fall apart. The Veda was kept by memory, so this is close to literal. The mind is also where all the thinking of living beings is woven together. Older commentators read this as the mind that learns and holds the Veda, and some later readers read it as pure awareness. The prayer asks that this mind turn toward the good.

1. Sit upright where you usually pray, with your eyes closed or lowered. 2. Recall a few lines of prayer or scripture you know by heart. Notice that they are here, held in your mind, with no book open. 3. See those words as spokes and your mind as the hub they rest in. Keep your attention on the hub, not on any one spoke. 4. When a thought pulls you away, notice that it too is woven into the same mind. Return to the hub. 5. At the end, say the closing line once, quietly: may my mind's resolve be auspicious. Then open your eyes.
