Holding All Three Times

Shukla Yajurveda 34.4

Meaning · English

By which all that was, is and will be is held by the immortal, by which the seven-priest sacrifice is spread out: may that mind of mine be of good resolve.

The mind is what holds time. What has happened is kept in memory, what is happening is met as it arrives, and what is coming is reached ahead of time. All three are gathered into one grasp. That grasp is called immortal, because the mind does not end with any single moment it holds. The seven-priest sacrifice was the great Soma rite, spread out through its many acts. The same mind that holds all time is the one by which this rite is spread. The prayer asks that this mind, so wide in what it holds, be set on the good.

1. Sit upright and still, eyes closed or resting low. 2. Let one thing from the past come to mind. Notice that the mind holds it now. 3. Notice what is present: sound, weight, the room. The same mind holds this too. 4. Let one thing still to come appear. See that this one mind holds past, present and future together. 5. When the mind drifts into one of them, notice which time it has gone to, and widen again to hold all three. 6. To close, say the last line once: may that mind of mine be of good resolve.
