The Deathless Inner Light

Shukla Yajurveda 34.3

Meaning · English

That which is knowing, awareness and steadiness, the deathless light within all beings, without which no deed whatever is done: may that mind of mine hold auspicious intent.

The mind is named three ways. It is knowing, the power that tells one thing from another. It is awareness, the plain fact of noticing at all. It is steadiness, what holds a choice in place. Later commentators split the first two this way, one as particular knowing, the other as general. The mind is also called a deathless light inside every living being, and nothing is done without it. Because every act starts there, the prayer asks that this mind be set toward the good.

1. Sit upright where you will not be disturbed, and close your eyes. 2. Notice the light within you that knows. Rest there quietly. 3. Find its three ways in turn: telling things apart, simply noticing, holding steady. 4. Move one hand slightly. See that the movement began in the mind before the hand moved. 5. When thoughts pull you away, return to that inner light. 6. After about ten minutes, say once, inwardly, may my mind be set toward the good. Then open your eyes.
