The Mind at Work

Shukla Yajurveda 34.2

Meaning · English

That by which skilled, thoughtful, steady people work at the sacrifice and in assemblies, the matchless wonder within beings: may that mind of mine be set on the good.

The mantra praises the mind by what it does. It is the means by which capable, thoughtful and steady people carry out their work, whether at the sacrifice or in the gatherings where the community meets. It is also called a wonder like no other, set inside every living being. Some older commentators read that word as 'worthy of worship.' The refrain then turns the praise into a request: that this same able mind settle on what is good.

1. Sit upright where you will not be disturbed, before the day's work begins. 2. Bring to mind the work ahead today: the tasks, the meetings, the people you will meet. 3. Notice that all of it will be done through this one mind. Turn your attention to the mind itself, the thing doing the noticing. 4. Say the mantra slowly once, aloud or under your breath. Rest on the last line, that this mind be set on the good. 5. When the mind runs off into planning, see it at work and return to the refrain. 6. Stop when you rise to begin the first task.
