The far-going mind

Shukla Yajurveda 34.1

Meaning · English

Divine, it goes far out from one awake, and goes so for one asleep; far-roaming, one light of lights: may that mind of mine hold a good resolve.

The mind is described first, and only then asked for anything. It is divine, a power given by the gods rather than something a person builds. It travels far: to distant places, people and years while a person is awake, and just as far in dreams. Commentators take 'light of lights' to mean that eyes, ears and the other senses show nothing until the mind lights them. The request at the end is small and exact: that this same restless, far-going mind settle on what is good.

1. Sit somewhere quiet, upright, with your eyes closed or lowered. 2. Watch where your mind goes. Notice it travelling far: to a room, a person, yesterday, tomorrow. 3. When you see it has gone, note where it went, without scolding it. It is doing what the verse says a mind does. 4. Notice that whatever you hear or picture, the mind is what lights it. Rest in seeing that for a while. 5. Near the end, say the last line once, slowly: may that mind of mine hold a good resolve. Stop when you have said it.
