Somanatha

Shiva Purana 4.14

The story · English

The sages asked Suta to tell them how the jyotirlingas came to be, and what power each one holds. Suta said he would tell it briefly, as he had heard it from his teacher. A hundred years would not be enough to tell it all. The first of the lingas, he said, is Somanatha. Daksha gave twenty-seven daughters in marriage to the Moon, Ashvini and the others. They were bright with such a husband, and he with them, the way gold sets off a jewel and a jewel sets off gold. But among all his wives the Moon loved one, Rohini, and no other woman was ever as dear to him. The rest were wounded by this, and they went to their father for shelter.

Daksha heard their grief and was grieved himself. He came to the Moon and spoke gently. "You were born in a spotless family, keeper of the digits of light. Why do you treat those who depend on you unequally? What is done is done, but do not do it again. To live so unevenly is called the road to hell." Then Daksha went home, sure that he had been heard. The Moon did not do as he said. He was deluded by the power of Shiva's illusion, which bewilders the whole world, and what is bound to happen is not turned aside. He stayed fixed on Rohini and paid the others no mind. Daksha came again, sorrowful, and pleaded once more. Then he said, "I asked you many times and you would not listen. So waste away."

At once the Moon began to waste. A great cry went up. The gods and sages did not know what to do, and they were stricken. The Moon himself told Indra and the others what had happened, and they went with the sages, Vasishtha among them, to Brahma for shelter. They bowed, praised him, and told him everything. Brahma was astonished. He praised Shiva's illusion and said, "This is a great misfortune for every world. The Moon is at fault, and Daksha cursed him." He recalled the Moon's old wrongs. He had taken Tara, the wife of Brihaspati, and sheltered with the daitya demons and fought the gods. Brahma and Atri forbade him, and he returned her. Seeing her with child, Brihaspati refused to keep her.

Brahma went on. Held back by the gods, Brihaspati grudgingly took her, saying he would keep her if she gave up the child. Brahma made her give it up. Then she asked whose child it was, and said it was the Moon's. So Brihaspati took her back after all, once Brahma had stopped him. "There are many such stories of his bad conduct," Brahma said. "What is done is done, and it does not turn out otherwise. But I will tell you a remedy." He told them to take the Moon with the gods to the holy field of Prabhasa. There the Moon should honour Shiva by the Mrityunjaya rite, set the Lord before him, and practise austerity every day. Shiva, pleased, would make him free of decay.

They did as Brahma said. At Prabhasa the sages called down the best of holy waters, Sarasvati and the rest, and worshipped Shiva in a clay linga by the Mrityunjaya rite. Then they left the Moon there and went home glad. For six months without a break the Moon practised austerity, repeating the Mrityunjaya mantra ten crore times, his mind unmoving. Shiva, who loves his devotees, appeared. "Ask a boon." The Moon said, "Stop the wasting of my body, and forgive my fault." Shiva answered, "Let your light wane through one fortnight, day by day, and grow again through the other." The gods returned rejoicing and asked Shiva to stay there with Uma. He took form as Someshvara, famous in the three worlds, who destroys wasting and leprosy. They set up the Chandrakunda, where bathing frees a person from sin. Whoever hears this story is freed of all sin and gains every wish.
