The story · English

Suta said: I will now tell of how Mallikarjuna came to be. Whoever hears it with devotion and a clear mind is freed from every sin. Part of it I have told before, and I tell it again, because it is the story of Kumara, divine and able to destroy all sin. Kumara was the son of Shiva and Parvati, mighty, the enemy of Taraka. He had gone round the earth and returned to Kailasa. Then the divine sage Narada arrived and told him everything that had happened, beginning with the marriage of Ganesha. Narada told it in a way that stirred the young god's mind, bending the account to suit his own purpose.

When Kumara heard it, he bowed to his mother and father and set out for the mountain Kraunca. His parents tried to stop him. He went anyway. Without her son, Parvati, the daughter of the mountain, grew deeply sad. Shiva, who knows how to teach, spoke to her. He said, "Why are you grieving, my dear? Do not grieve, Parvati. Our son will come back. Put this heavy sorrow down." She would not accept it. Her grief only deepened. So Shiva sent the divine sages out, and the gods and all the sages with their attendants went gladly, wise and well-meaning, to bring Kumara home.

They reached him and bowed low. They explained things to him in many ways and begged him with respect to return. Their request carried Shiva's own command. Kumara would not listen. He was overcome by a great pride, and it left him unsteady. The gods and sages turned back to Shiva, bowed, received his word, and went each to their own place. Then Parvati felt the full pain of parting from her son. Shiva too was filled with sorrow, because Kumara had not come. The two of them, grieving and humbled, did what parents do in the world. They went themselves, out of love, to the place where their son was staying.

Kumara learned that his parents were coming. He felt no tenderness for it. He went further away, a distance of three yojanas, deeper into Kraunca. So when their son had gone so far, Shiva and Parvati settled there in the form of light. They were aching with love for him. At every change of the moon, they went to see their son Kumara. On the new-moon day, Shiva goes there himself. On the full-moon day, Parvati goes there without fail. From that day on, a single linga of Shiva, known as Mallikarjuna, has been famous in all three worlds.

Whoever sees that linga is freed from every fault. There is no doubt of it. He gains all that he desires. Sorrow goes far from him, and he finds happiness that does not end. He will not again suffer the pain of lying in a mother's womb. Wealth, grain, prosperity, good standing and health come to him, and what he longs for is fulfilled. There is no doubt in this. This is called the second jyotirlinga, named Mallika. Seeing it gives every happiness, and it was told for the good of the world.
