The sages said to Suta, "You know everything, by Vyasa's grace. We never tire of hearing about the lights of Shiva. Out of your boundless kindness, tell us now of the third jyotirlinga." Suta answered that he was fortunate to sit among good company, and he asked them to listen with care. There was a lovely city called Avanti, which gives liberation to every living being. It was dear to Shiva and made the world pure. A brahmin lived there, devoted to good works, to the Vedas and to the sacred fire. Every day he made a clay image of Shiva and worshipped it. He had four sons like him: Devapriya the eldest, then Priyamedha, then Krita, then Suvrata. As the moon grows through the bright fortnight, so their virtues grew, and the whole city shone with the radiance of holy knowledge.
Then something happened. On the mountain Ratnamala lived a great demon named Dushana, king of the daityas. He was strong and hated dharma. Because Brahma had granted him a boon, he was shaking the world. He defeated the gods and drove them from their places. He tore apart the duties of the Vedas and the Smritis everywhere, as a lion scatters hares, and he drove dharma out of every holy place. Only lovely Avanti still stood. So he marched there with a great army, set on the brahmins. He called four chief demons to him and said, "Why do these wicked brahmins not obey me? I have beaten every god and king. Can I not bring brahmins under my rule? Let them give up Shiva's dharma and the Vedas if they want to live. Otherwise their lives are in doubt." The four demons went out to the four directions, blazing like fires at the end of the world.
The brahmins heard of it and felt no grief. They were absorbed in Shiva and did not stir from their meditation, even by a hair's breadth. The city filled with demons, and frightened townspeople came to them: "Masters, what should we do? The wicked ones are here and many of us are already hurt." The sons of Vedapriya answered, trusting in Shankara, "We have no strength to meet this terror, and no weapons. But if even an ordinary refuge is insulted, how much worse for mighty Shiva. Let him protect us today. There is no shelter in this world but Shiva, who loves his devotees." They made the clay linga, worshipped it properly and sat in meditation. Dushana saw them and cried, "Strike them down. Kill them." They did not even hear him.
Just as the demon moved to kill them, a pit opened with a roar where the clay linga stood. Out of it rose Shiva in a terrible form, the one known as Mahakala, destroyer of the wicked and refuge of the good. He said, "I am Mahakala, born for wicked men like you. Villain, get away from these brahmins." With a single roar he burned Dushana to ash, and his army with him. Some of the troops were killed and some ran. As darkness vanishes before the sun, so the rest perished at the sight of Shiva. Drums sounded in heaven and flowers fell. Vishnu, Brahma and all the gods came and praised him. Shiva comforted the brahmins and said, "Ask a boon." They bowed with joined palms: "Mahakala, give us freedom from the ocean of rebirth. Stay here to protect the world, and save those who see you."
Shiva stayed in that beautiful pit and gave the brahmins a good end. They reached liberation. The place around them became a linga a krosha across, and Shiva is known on earth as Mahakalesvara. No one who sees it suffers even in a dream, and whoever worships it with a wish receives that wish, and liberation after. The sages asked for more about the devotees of Mahakala. Suta told of Chandrasena, king of Ujjayini, a Shiva devotee in command of his senses. His friend Manibhadra, chief of Shiva's attendants, gave him the jewel Cintamani, which blazed like the sun and made metals into gold. Wearing it on his neck, the king shone like the sun among gods. Other kings grew greedy and asked for it, and he refused them all. They marched with four-fold armies and shut all four gates of Ujjayini.
Seeing his city besieged, Chandrasena took refuge in Mahakalesvara. Without food, resolute, he worshipped day and night. Shiva was pleased and began to arrange his protection. At that moment a widowed cowherd woman, carrying her five-year-old son, came near the temple and watched the king's worship with wonder. She bowed and went back to her tent. The boy was curious and wanted to do the same. He found a pretty stone near their tent, set it up as a linga, and offered scent, ornaments, incense, lamps and imagined food. He danced and bowed again and again. His mother called him to eat, but he would not come. She dragged him by the hand and struck him in anger. Still he stayed, so she hurled the linga far away, ruining his worship, and went inside.
The boy cried "Lord of lords" and fell senseless with grief. When he woke, by Shiva's grace a golden temple of Mahakala stood there, with gem-set pillars and crystal floors. Inside was a jeweled linga with his own offerings on it. At sunset he came out and found his tent turned to gold, and his mother asleep inside, bright as a goddess. He woke her and told her all. The king came at night and wept for joy, embracing the boy. The besieging kings heard it at dawn and said, "If Shiva is with this king, his anger will destroy us." They laid down their weapons, worshipped Mahakala, and made the boy king of all cowherds. Hanuman then appeared. He said, "Except Shiva there is no refuge for anyone." The boy was named Srikara. The eighth in his line, Nanda, would have Krishna as his son. Hanuman vanished, and both king and boy reached the highest state.
