The story · English
The King asked the sage to tell the story of the Lord's descent into the Yadu dynasty, for hearing about Krishna is like medicine for the soul. Suka, the son of Vyasa, honored the king and began the account. He first spoke of the Earth, who had become overwhelmed by the weight of arrogant demons. In the form of a cow, weeping and distressed, Earth approached Lord Brahma. Brahma and the other gods, including the three-eyed Shiva, traveled to the shore of the Milky Ocean. There, Brahma worshipped the Lord of the Universe, Vrishakapi, with the Purusha Sukta. In meditation Brahma heard the Lord's words spoken in the sky, and he told the gods that the Lord already knew of the Earth's distress and that they should take birth among the Yadus.
Brahma revealed the Lord's plan to the gods. He explained that the Lord would personally manifest in the house of Vasudeva. To assist him, Ananta, the thousand-headed Lord, would come first, and the divine Maya would also take form on earth. Once this was decreed, Brahma comforted the Earth and returned to his supreme abode. The scene then shifts to Mathura, the capital city where Hari is eternally present. Some time ago, Vasudeva was preparing for his wedding journey with Devaki, the daughter of Devaka. Kansa, the son of Ugrasena, acting out of love for his sister, drove the chariot for the couple, surrounded by hundreds of golden chariots. As a dowry, Devaka, who loved his daughter, gave her four hundred elephants adorned with golden garlands, fifteen thousand horses, eighteen hundred chariots and two hundred young maidservants.
As the wedding party moved forward to the sound of conchs and drums, an invisible voice suddenly echoed through the air. It warned Kansa, 'O fool, the eighth child of this woman you are carrying in your chariot will be the one to kill you.' Enraged and terrified, the wicked Kansa drew his sword and grabbed Devaki by the hair, intending to kill her on the spot. Vasudeva stepped in to stop him, pleading with Kansa not to kill a woman on her wedding day. He spoke of the nature of life and death, arguing that death is inevitable for all living beings, and that it is foolish to act with such cruelty toward a helpless girl who is like a daughter to him.
Despite Vasudeva's philosophical appeals, Kansa remained stubborn. Seeing that Kansa would not be swayed, Vasudeva made a desperate bargain to save his bride. He looked at the cruel man and smiled, though his heart was heavy, and promised, 'I will hand over every child born to her to you. You need not fear her.' Satisfied with this agreement, Kansa let Devaki go and allowed the couple to enter their home. Over the following years, Devaki gave birth to eight sons and a daughter, one each year. Kansa was pleased by Vasudeva's truthfulness and equanimity. He took the first son, Kirtiman, whom Vasudeva had surrendered with great difficulty, but then, laughing, gave the child back, saying he feared only the eighth child mentioned in the prophecy. Vasudeva took his son home, but took no comfort in the words of that unreliable man.
The atmosphere grew tense as the sage Narada visited Kansa. He told the tyrant that Nanda's cowherds, the Vrishnis, Vasudeva, Devaki, the Yadu women and even Kansa's own followers were all gods, and that the Lord meant to kill the demons burdening the Earth. Taking the Yadus for gods, and fearing that Vishnu would be born of Devaki to kill him, Kansa imprisoned both Devaki and Vasudeva in chains. To ensure his own survival, he murdered every child born to them as soon as they arrived. Kansa had become a monster; knowing himself to be the great demon Kalanemi reborn, he then opposed the Yadus, imprisoned his father, Ugrasena, and ruled the kingdom of the Shurasenas himself. In his blind greed and fear, he treated his own family as enemies, unaware that the divine plan was unfolding exactly as ordained, leading toward the birth of the one who would finally end his reign of terror.
