The Yadavas were in a state of terror. Kansa, sheltered by Jarasandha, the king of Magadha, and joined by powerful demons like Pralamba, Baka, Chanura and Trinavarta, along with the formidable Putana and others, had launched a brutal campaign against them. This persecution drove the Yadavas to seek refuge in the lands of the Kurus, Panchalas, Kekayas, Shalvas, Vidarbhas, Nishadhas, Videhas, and Koshalas. Meanwhile, in the prison of Kansa, Devaki had already lost six children to the tyrant's cruelty. Now, she carried a seventh embryo. This child was not a mere mortal, but the divine abode of Vishnu known as Ananta. The Lord, seeing the fear that Kansa had instilled in the world, decided to use His divine Maya to ensure the safety of His devotees.
Vishnu spoke to Yoga-maya, the goddess of divine illusion. 'Go, O virtuous one, to the village of Vraja, where the cowherds live,' He commanded. 'There you will find Rohini, the wife of Vasudeva, living in the home of Nanda. Other wives of Vasudeva are hiding in caves, terrified by Kansa. I want you to take the embryo currently in Devaki's womb—my abode known as Shesha—and transfer it into the womb of Rohini. After that, I will take a portion of myself to be born as the son of Devaki. You, however, shall be born to Yasoda, the wife of Nanda. People will honor you as the fulfiller of all desires, offering you incense and gifts.'
Yoga-maya accepted the Lord's command and performed the transfer. Because he was drawn from the womb, this child would be known as Sankarshana; as Rama, because he delights people; and as Balabhadra, for his great strength. When the embryo was moved, the citizens of Mathura lamented, 'Alas, the embryo is lost!' Then the Lord, as a portion of Himself, entered Vasudeva's mind. Vasudeva shone like the sun, and no being could approach him. From his mind Devaki received the Lord, as the east receives the moon. Carrying the source of the entire universe, she glowed with a light that filled the prison, yet it stayed confined, like a covered flame or Saraswati in a deceitful scholar.
When Kansa saw Devaki radiating this extraordinary light, he was gripped by a sudden, sharp fear. 'Surely Hari, who will take my life, has entered her womb,' Kansa said. 'What must I do at once? Yet killing a woman, my own pregnant sister, would destroy my fame, fortune and lifespan.' He knew that a man who lives by such cruelty is dead while still alive, cursed by people when his body dies, and bound for blind darkness. So Kansa turned back from that terrible deed and spared Devaki. Nursing his enmity, he waited for Hari's birth, and whether sitting, eating or wandering the earth, he thought so constantly of Hrishikesha that he saw the whole world full of Him.
Then Brahma and Shiva came there, with sages like Narada and the gods, to offer prayers. They sang hymns to the Lord, praising Him as the ultimate Truth and the refuge of all beings. They reminded Him of His previous incarnations as the fish, the horse, the tortoise, the man-lion, the boar, and the swan, and begged Him to once again remove the burden of the earth. Then they turned to Devaki: 'Mother, how fortunate you are! The Supreme Lord is in your womb for our good. Do not fear Kansa, the Bhoja king, who is about to die. Your son will protect the Yadavas.' Having offered these prayers, the gods and the celestial hosts returned to the heavens, leaving the world to await the birth of the Divine.
