The Night Krishna Was Born

The story · English

Then came an hour graced with every good sign. The birth-star of the Unborn One had risen, and every star and planet stood in a calm place. The four directions cleared. The night sky was spotless, full of rising stars, and the whole earth, its towns and villages, its cattle pastures and its mines, was thick with good omens. Rivers ran clear. Lakes were bright with lotuses. The forests hung heavy with blossom and rang with birds and bees. A clean, fragrant wind blew, soft against the skin. The sacred fires of the brahmins burned calm and steady. The hearts of good people, whom the demons had tormented, grew light. In heaven the drums began. Kinnaras and Gandharvas sang, Siddhas and Charanas chanted praise, and Vidyadhara women danced beside the Apsaras. Sages and gods let fall flowers, and out over the sea the clouds rumbled, softly, softly.

At midnight, in the deepest dark, Vishnu, who lives hidden in every heart, appeared from Devaki, a woman as radiant as a goddess, the way the full moon lifts out of the eastern sky. Vasudeva looked at what lay before him. It was a child, but what a child: eyes like lotuses, skin dark as a heavy rain-cloud, four arms holding the conch, the mace and the raised discus. The Shrivatsa mark was on his chest and the Kaustubha jewel shone at his throat. He wore yellow silk. His crown and earrings were set with precious vaidurya stones, and their light spilled through his thick curls; a girdle, armlets and bracelets blazed on him. Vasudeva's eyes went wide. This was Hari, and this was his son. Swept up in the joy of Krishna's coming, he gave away, in his heart, ten thousand cows to the brahmins.

Then Vasudeva understood who this was, and his fear left him. He bowed low, steadied his mind, joined his palms, and praised the child whose own light filled the birthing room. “I know you now. You are the Person beyond nature, pure awareness and joy, who sees into every mind. You make this world of three qualities and seem to enter it, though you never do, just as the elements build a body and yet were there before it. You take on white to keep the worlds, red to make them, dark to end them. Now, Lord of all, you have come into my house to guard this world, and you will cut down the demon armies that call themselves kings. But this brute heard you would be born to us, and he killed your elder brothers. When his men tell him you are here, he will come at once, weapons raised.”

Devaki saw on her son the marks of the Supreme Person. She was frightened of Kamsa, and still she came to him with a pure smile. “They call you the unmanifest, the first, the light beyond all qualities, and you are that: Vishnu himself. When the worlds end, you alone remain, and they name you Shesha, the one left over. A mortal runs from the snake of death through every world and finds no safe place, until he reaches your feet; then he sleeps at ease, and death turns away. Save us from Ugrasena's terrible son. Madhusudana, never let that wicked man learn you were born from me. I tremble for you. Withdraw this four-armed form with its conch, discus, mace and lotus; eyes of flesh must not see it. You hold the whole universe in your body, and you lay in my womb. What a play you make of the human world.”

The Lord answered. “Good lady, long ago, in the age of Svayambhuva, you were Prishni, and your husband here was Sutapa, a Prajapati without a stain. When Brahma told you both to bring children into the world, you first mastered your senses and took up the hardest austerity. You bore the rain and the wind, the blazing sun and the snow, heat and cold, season after season. You held your breath until your minds were washed clean. You lived on fallen leaves and air, and with quiet hearts you worshipped me, hoping for a blessing from my hand. Twelve thousand years of the gods went by like that. Then, pleased by your austerity, your faith and your devotion, I appeared before you in this very form, ready to give what you wanted. ‘Choose a boon,’ I said. And you chose a son like me.”

The Lord went on. “You had never tasted worldly pleasures, and you had no children, and my own maya clouded you, so you never asked me for release. When I left, you had your boon, and you lived the life of a household. Seeing no one in the world your equal in goodness and generosity, I became your son myself, and I was called Prishnigarbha. Later you were Aditi and Kashyapa, and I was born to you again as Upendra, called Vamana because I was small. Now, in this third birth, I have come to you once more in this same form. What I say is true. I showed you this form so you would remember; a mortal shape alone brings no knowledge of me. Think of me with love, as your son and as Brahman, and you will reach my highest home.” Then Hari fell silent, and by his own power, as his parents watched, he became an ordinary newborn.

Then Vasudeva, moved by the Lord, lifted his son and made to leave the birthing room. At that very moment Yogamaya, the Unborn, was born to Nanda's wife. Her power stole every sense from the doorkeepers and the townspeople, and one by one they sank into sleep. Every door stood shut fast: great doors, barred with iron bolts and chains, that no one could force. But as Vasudeva came near with Krishna in his arms, the doors opened by themselves, the way darkness gives way before the sun. Outside, the sky was pouring, and the clouds rumbled low. And behind him came Shesha, the great serpent, spreading his hoods over father and child to keep the rain off them.

Indra sent the rain down again and again. The Yamuna, Yama's younger sister, was swollen with deep water, foaming and racing, churned by hundreds of terrifying whirlpools. Yet she opened a way for him, as the ocean once did for the lord of Sri. Vasudeva reached Nanda's Vraja and found the cowherds lying deep in sleep. He laid his son on Yasoda's bed, picked up her newborn daughter, and turned for home. There he put the little girl down on Devaki's bed, locked the iron fetters back on his own feet, and sat bound, just as he had been before. And Yasoda, Nanda's wife, knew that she had given birth, but she was so worn out, and so lost in sleep, that she could not tell whether her child was a boy or a girl.
