Master Yourself First

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 34.10

Meaning · English

Let a man first bring himself under rule, and treat that self as the opponent to be beaten. After that, his advisers and his enemies will not slip out of his hands. His victory over them will not fail.

Three words carry it. Atman is the self, and in these verses it means your own mind and senses, the part that pulls you toward one act after another. Amatya are counsellors, people who stay close and work alongside you: ministers, advisers, helpers. Amitra are enemies, literally the not-friends. Vidura gives an order of conquest. First take your own self in hand, and treat it as the opponent that has to be beaten. Only after that do counsellors come under your influence, and then enemies. The victory he describes does not fail, because it rests on a ruler who is no longer carried about by his own cravings. He says this to a king who cannot sleep. Dhritarashtra's worry is aimed outward, at advisers, at rivals, at the coming war. Vidura turns it back toward the one who is worrying. His reason is simple. Control has to begin at the point nearest you. A man whose orders change with every craving and mood has no steady hand to govern anyone else with.

A carpenter sets out to cut a dozen boards, but the ruler he measures with is itself bent. Every cut comes out wrong, however carefully he works. The ruler is the self, and the boards are the counsellors and enemies he hopes to shape. Straighten the ruler first, and the cutting has something true to follow.

1. Tonight, before sleep, spend five minutes recalling the day. Pick one thing you did because of a craving or a mood rather than a clear judgment. Just name it. 2. Tomorrow, before you correct someone or push back on them, pause for three slow breaths. Notice which urge in you is asking to speak. 3. Choose one small habit of your own, such as the phone at bedtime, and keep to it for this week. Notice how it feels to govern that one thing.
