Rising Beyond Death
Aitareya Upanishad 3.1.4
Meaning · English
Through this knowing Self he rose out of this world, and in the heavenly world beyond, having reached every wish, he passed beyond death, passed beyond death.
He is the one who has understood what came just before: the knowing behind seeing, wanting and remembering is the same knowing behind every god and creature. That knowing Self is what he carries out when he leaves this world. In the heavenly world beyond, every wish is met. Then he is free of death. The phrase is said twice because that is how the teaching closes. Repeating the last words marks the end.
A person who carries their own lamp can step out of a lit house onto a dark road and still see where they are going. The knowing Self works the same way. It is what goes with him out of this world, so leaving does not mean losing the light he lived by.
