Reflection Is Self-Knowledge

Shiva Sutras 1.17

Meaning · English

Vitarka is the knowing of one's own self.

Three words carry the sutra. Vitarka comes from vi and tark, to turn over in the mind. In everyday speech it means argument or doubt. Here it is the inward turning-over of one thought until it settles. Atma is the self, what remains when every role and name is set down. Jnana is knowing, the kind that comes from being something, not from being told about it. The plain sense: this settled turning-over of the thought of who one is, is itself knowledge of the self. It is not knowledge gathered from books. It is the self knowing itself. Why it is taught here: it belongs to the first way, shambhava, the way of Shiva, where nothing is climbed and no method is built. The sutras before it speak of the bond that keeps a person small. This one names what loosens it, a steady inner reflection. The second way, shakta, works through purified thought, and the third, anava, through practice. This sutra asks for neither. Bhaskara's Varttika says the yogi whose bond has been broken reflects, 'I am Shiva himself, the self of the universe,' and that this shining is what is called knowing of the self. Shiva here is the name for the whole's own awareness. The commentators agree the reflection is certainty rising from within, not debate.

A man hunts through every room for his glasses, checking pockets and shelves. Then he touches his forehead and finds them there. He learns nothing new. The search ends in recognition of what was already on him. Reflection on the self is like that: it arrives at what was never missing.

1. Choose one quiet moment today, perhaps after a meal or before sleep, and sit for two minutes. 2. Say slowly in your mind, 'I am Shiva himself, the self of all,' the thought the text gives. 3. Do not push for a feeling. Notice what answers: doubt, warmth, or nothing. 4. Repeat the same two minutes for a week, and note whether the answer changes.
