Joy Found in Seeing

Shiva Sutras 1.18

Meaning · English

The joy of the world is the happiness of samadhi.

Four words carry this sutra. Loka is the world, and its root means 'to see', so loka is whatever is seen, together with the one who sees. Ananda is joy, a delight that needs no cause. Samadhi is a gathering together, a steadiness in which the mind stops scattering. Sukha is ease, the happiness of being at rest. Put plainly, the sutra says the delight met in the world and the happiness of samadhi are one. They are not two joys, one outside and one inside. Vasugupta teaches this as part of the first way, shambhava, where no technique is used and understanding alone does the work. It rests on the sutra before it. Once the mind's turning over is taken as knowing the self, what is seen and the one who sees stop being strangers. Bhaskara's Varttika says that for the yogi, seer and seen arise in one awareness and are gathered into 'I'. The joy that rises within at that moment is samadhi's happiness. He adds that this is the same joy as the world's, for those who look within. Kshemaraja, in the Vimarshini, is read as taking the sutra to mean that the yogi's joy is not shut away in trance but is the very taste of the world around him.

A spoon of honey is stirred into a pot of tea. Every cup poured afterward is sweet, whichever cup it is. The honey is the joy found within, and the cups are the things the eye meets in the day.

1. Once today, sit for two minutes somewhere quiet. Do nothing except notice whether anything in you feels settled. 2. Then look at one ordinary thing for half a minute: a window, a cup, a face. 3. Notice whether any of that settledness is present in the looking. If it is not, leave it at that. Nothing here is to be forced. 4. Try this again later in the week, at a different hour.
