A Body Made by Will

Shiva Sutras 1.19

Meaning · English

When one is joined to Shakti, the body arises.

Three words carry this sutra. Shakti is power, from a root meaning to be able. In Shiva's teaching she is the power of consciousness itself, the will that moves before any act. Sandhana is joining, a setting together, from a root meaning to place. Sharira is the body, and utpatti is its arising. So the plain sense is this. Where a person is joined to Shakti, the body arises from that joining. The body is not first and the will second. Will comes first, and the body takes its form from it. Shiva teaches this inside the first way, shambhava, where everything is met directly in consciousness, with no steps. Sutra 1.17 spoke of reflection as knowing the self, and 1.18 spoke of the joy of samadhi. Both rest on that same power, and this sutra names what it makes. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes the joining as the yogi's full absorption in Shakti, with bodies arising as that will wishes. Bhaskara's Varttika says the same and adds that other powers come with it.

A potter sets wet clay on the wheel and presses with both palms. The clay has no shape of its own. It rises into a bowl or a jar according to the hands. The hands map to Shakti, the will. The clay maps to the body, which takes its form from what moves it.

1. Once today, before you stand up from a chair, wait a moment and notice the wish to stand. 2. Then stand slowly. Notice that the wish came first and the body followed. 3. Repeat this with one more small act, such as reaching for a cup or turning your head toward a sound. 4. Do not try to will anything unusual. Only watch how an ordinary wish becomes a movement.
