Joining and Parting Elements
Shiva Sutras 1.20
Meaning · English
The joining of the elements, the parting of the elements, and the gathering together of the world.
Three things are named. Bhuta means whatever has come to be: the elements that make up bodies and things. Sandhana is joining. Prthaktva is apartness, the coming apart of what was joined. Samghatta is a striking together, a gathering of many things into one meeting. The sutra gives no verb and no doer. It lists three kinds of mastery over the made world: joining its parts, parting them, and bringing the whole world's scattered things together. This follows from the sutra before it. There the body arises through sandhana, joining with Shakti, the power of Shiva. The same word returns, now widened from one body to the elements and the world. It belongs to the shambhava way, where all of this flows from Shiva's own will and not from effort. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes these as powers that come with that union with Shakti. Bhaskara's Varttika adds particulars: nourishing or separating things to ease illness, and bringing what is far off in place and time into direct perception. He also says the yogi who is joined to Shakti stops wanting limited powers and wants the fullest one, knowing the whole world as his own self.
Salt stirred into water vanishes, and boiling the water off brings the salt back. Someone who sees how a thing was joined can part it, and gather it again. The sutra says this skill belongs to the one who knows how the world is held together.
1. Once today, when you stir sugar into tea or mix flour into dough, watch the joining slowly and say to yourself that two things became one. 2. Later, when you sort laundry or clear a table, notice the parting of what was mixed. 3. This evening, sit for two minutes and recall the day's separate events and people. Notice how they were gathered into one day.
