Pure Knowing and Mastery

Shiva Sutras 1.21

Meaning · English

From the rising of pure knowing comes mastery over the circle.

Four words carry the sutra. Shuddha means pure, with nothing mixed in. Vidya means knowing. Udaya means the rising, the way the sun comes up. Cakra means a circle, the whole round of powers and happenings. Isha is lord, so cakreshatva is being lord of that round. Siddhi is something accomplished, here arriving as a result and not as a prize pursued. The plain sense is this. When pure knowing rises, mastery over the circle follows. Pure knowing is not extra information. In Bhaskara's reading it is the settled conviction that all this world is oneself. Nothing is left over as an outsider. Shiva teaches it in the first way, shambhava, where knowing alone is the means and no technique is needed. The sutras just before describe how body and elements arise, join and part. This one turns to the knower who sees that whole round from inside, so it no longer rules him. Bhaskara's Varttika says the yogi who holds this conviction steadily gains the highest sovereignty, resting in a self that is both the world and beyond it. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini, as far as the commentators agree, treats the rising of knowing as the cause and the mastery as its fruit.

A man walks into a dark room and keeps knocking against the furniture. Someone lights a lamp. He is no longer pushed about, because he sees where everything stands. The rising of pure knowing is the lamp, and mastery of the circle is walking freely among its contents.

1. Once today, stand or sit somewhere busy for two minutes and look at everything in view. 2. Notice that each sight and sound reaches you only inside your own knowing. Nothing is seen except in it. 3. Later, when something pushes you around, such as a remark or a delay, ask once what in you is aware of the pushing. 4. Leave it there. Do not try to reach any state.
