The Great Lake

Shiva Sutras 1.22

Meaning · English

By staying joined to the great lake, the strength of mantra is directly met.

Four words carry the sutra. Mahahrada: maha is great, hrada is a deep, still pool. Anusandhana: anu is close after, sandhana is joining, so it means staying joined to something and following it back to its place. Virya is strength, the living force in a thing. Anubhava is direct experience, not a thought about it. A mantra is a sacred word held in the mind. The sutra says that when attention stays joined to the great lake, the strength of mantra is met directly. The great lake is Shakti, the Goddess who is Shiva's own power and the depth every word rises from. So a mantra is more than its syllables. Its strength is that source speaking through it. Bhaskara's Varttika describes the lake as clear and deep, holding the whole world, and not limited by place or time. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes the lake as the Goddess of consciousness and the strength of mantra as the full, unbroken sense of I. This belongs to shambhava, the first of the three ways, where nothing is built up and attention rests on the source itself. The other two ways, shakta and anava, use thought and then effort. It follows from the two sutras before, which show how things join and part, and how pure knowing then rises.

1. Sit still and let the mind settle. 2. Say a mantra you already know, silently, slowly. 3. Listen for the depth it rises from, the stillness under the sound. 4. When the mind wanders, return to that depth, not to the word. 5. When the word grows quiet, stay joined to the depth without repeating. 6. Stop when the time you set is over, and sit one moment more.
