Practice and Letting Go

Yoga Sutras 1.12

Meaning · English

Through practice and through dispassion, the turnings of the mind are brought to rest.

Three words carry the sutra. Abhyasa is practice: doing one thing again and again, on purpose. Vairagya is dispassion, from a root meaning to lose colour. The pull of things fades, so the mind stops reaching for them. Nirodha is a holding still, a stopping of movement. It does not mean crushing anything. The word tat, "their", points back to the vrittis, the turnings of the mind, which Patanjali has already named. The whole sutra says that these turnings come to rest by two means together. Practice gives the mind something steady to return to. Dispassion loosens the grip of whatever keeps pulling it away. Patanjali says this because he has just set the goal, a still mind, and a student then asks how. He answers with two means, one that builds and one that releases. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, says the mind's stream runs toward good and toward harm. Dispassion shuts off the flow toward objects of craving. Practice keeps the stream of discernment moving. Later commentators follow his reading and add detail on the degrees of dispassion. Neither means works alone in this teaching. Practice with no letting go keeps a restless mind busy. Letting go with no practice leaves it with nowhere to rest.

Think of carrying a brimming cup of tea across a room. Keeping your eyes on the cup is the steady effort. Not turning your head at every noise or movement is the letting go. The cup stays level when both are present. Practice is the eyes on the cup, and dispassion is the head that does not turn.

1. Choose one small steady act today, such as sitting for five minutes by a clock, watching your breath at the nostrils. 2. When your attention wanders, notice what it wandered toward. Name it silently, for example "phone" or "worry", and come back. 3. Once this evening, notice a small pull, such as reaching for a snack or a screen. Wait ten slow breaths before deciding, and just watch how the pull rises and fades. 4. Repeat the same five minutes tomorrow, at the same hour if you can.
