The Rule Behind Inference
Tarka Sangraha, Anumana 4
Meaning · English
Wherever there is smoke, there is fire: a fixed rule that two things always go together like this is called pervasion.
Inference needs a rule to stand on. You see smoke on a hill and conclude there is fire. What allows that jump? For the Nyaya, the answer is vyapti, usually translated 'pervasion'. Fire pervades smoke, covering every place where smoke turns up. Annambhatta defines it in two parts. Sahacarya means going together: two things found in the same place. Niyama means a fixed rule, with no exceptions. So vyapti is a going-together that never fails. Smoke and fire is only the example, not the definition. Annambhatta's own commentary, the Dipika, makes the point sharper. Fire must be found wherever smoke is, and there must be no place with smoke where fire is wholly missing. This means the rule runs in one direction, from smoke to fire. It does not claim that wherever there is fire there is smoke. Without such a rule, smoke tells you nothing. With it, smoke becomes a sign.
1. Today, notice one moment when you conclude something you cannot see. Wet streets, so it rained. A full car park, so the shop is busy. 2. Write the rule behind it in one line: 'Wherever X, there Y.' 3. Spend two minutes looking for one case where X shows up without Y, such as a street cleaner wetting the road. 4. If you find one, rewrite the rule more carefully, or hold the conclusion more loosely.
The structure is familiar. Modern logic writes a universal statement, 'for anything, if smoke then fire', and treats a single counter-example as enough to defeat it. That matches the Nyaya demand for no exceptions. The hard question is the same in both traditions: how do we know the rule holds everywhere when we have seen only some cases? Hume argued that no number of observed cases strictly guarantees the next one. On his view, we expect the pattern out of habit. Science lives with this by treating general rules as well tested but revisable, and by actively searching for counter-examples. The smoke example shows the risk. A theatre's smoke machine strains the rule unless 'smoke' is defined narrowly. Whether induction can ever be fully justified is still an open question in philosophy.
