Meaning · English
Paramarsha is knowing that the subject has the mark, together with the mark's rule. For example: 'This mountain has smoke, which fire always accompanies.' The knowledge it produces, 'The mountain has fire,' is the inference.
How does knowing a rule turn into knowing a new fact? Annambhatta names the hinge. Two pieces of knowledge are needed. The first is vyapti, the rule that a mark never occurs without what it signals: where there is smoke, there is fire. The second is pakshadharmata, knowing that the mark is actually present on the paksha, the thing you are reasoning about. Here that means smoke on this mountain. Paramarsha, literally 'grasping together', is a single thought that holds both at once: 'this mountain has smoke, the kind that fire always accompanies.' The Dipika, Annambhatta's own commentary, adds that this is one awareness whose content already includes the rule, not two facts sitting side by side. From that thought comes the anumiti, the inferred knowledge: 'the mountain has fire.' The commentary glosses 'born of it' as born of paramarsha. So for the Nyaya, remembering a rule and glancing at smoke are not yet an inference. The conclusion arises only once the two are fused into one thought.
1. Today, when you conclude something you cannot see, such as rain from wet streets or a visitor from shoes at the door, pause for ten seconds and name the mark you noticed. 2. Then say the rule you are relying on as one sentence: 'wherever X, there Y.' 3. Join the two in a single line, the way the text does, for example: 'this street has wetness of the kind rain leaves.' 4. Only then state the conclusion. Check whether it actually followed from that line or whether you jumped ahead.
Modern logic would write this as two premises and a conclusion: every smoky place is fiery; this mountain is smoky; so it is fiery. Paramarsha adds a psychological claim that formal logic leaves out. On this view, the premises must be joined in one act of thought before the conclusion arises. Cognitive science broadly agrees that holding a rule and a case in mind together takes real work. People often know both and still fail to connect them. The weaker link is the rule itself. Hume argued that no number of smoky, fiery hearths guarantees the next case. Science treats such generalisations as revisable when a counter-example turns up, such as mist mistaken for smoke. One question is still open. 'Grasping together' may be a distinct mental event, or it may simply be logical form described from the inside.
