Pity Overwhelms the Archer
Bhagavad Gita 1.27

Meaning · English
Seeing all those relatives standing there, Arjuna, son of Kunti, was overcome by deep compassion. Sunk in sorrow, he spoke these words.
Three words carry the verse. Kripa means compassion, a soft pity that comes from seeing others as one's own. Avishta means entered, taken over, so Arjuna is not merely feeling pity; it has moved in and filled him. Vishidan comes from a root meaning to sink, to give way, the way a floor gives way under weight. Sanjaya reports the plain sense to the blind king: Arjuna looked at the relatives drawn up on both sides, all present, all standing ready, and pity took him whole. His grief sank him, and then he began to speak. Sanjaya gives the reason in the sight itself. These are not strangers; they are the people named just before, elders, teachers, cousins, friends. The problem it answers is how a trained warrior, who asked to see the field, ends up unable to hold his ground. The verse asks nothing of the listener yet. It sets the scene for the words that follow. Shankara and Ramanuja are often read as treating this compassion as clouded by attachment to family, a feeling that stops him from his duty. Madhva also reads it as a lapse in his resolve. All of this is the commentators' view; Sanjaya only reports what he sees in Arjuna.
A man walks into a crowded wedding hall to deliver a hard notice, and halfway down the aisle he recognizes every face at the tables: his aunts, his old teacher, his school friends. His voice, rehearsed all week, drops away. Arjuna's pity is that moment, when a task meets the faces it will touch.
1. Pick one hard task you are putting off, such as a difficult conversation or a decision that affects people you love. 2. Today, for two minutes, sit and picture the faces of those it will touch. 3. Notice where the heaviness sits in your body, and whether it feels like pity, fear or dread. 4. Say the feeling to yourself in one plain sentence, then carry on with your day.
A man stands in the corridor of a hospital where his elderly parents are both admitted, and the doctor asks him to decide which treatment to sign for. He looks at the relatives gathered in the waiting area, each with a different opinion, and his chest tightens. His thoughts slow, and his words will not come. The verse speaks to that moment by naming it exactly. Sanjaya reports that pity took hold of Arjuna when he looked at the faces before him, and that it sank him before he spoke. Step by step: first the sight, then the feeling, then the sinking, and only after that, speech. Seeing the order helps a person tell the feeling from the decision, since the feeling arrives first and the choice has not yet been made. Ordinary experience confirms that strong emotion can slow thinking and loosen the voice. The verse does not promise that naming the feeling removes the grief, settles the family's quarrel, or makes the choice easy. Where a doctor's advice is needed, it remains needed.
