Meaning · English

There Arjun saw them standing: fathers, grandfathers, teachers, maternal uncles, brothers, sons, grandsons, friends, fathers-in-law and well-wishers, indeed, in both armies alike.

Sanjaya is describing what Arjun's eyes land on once the chariot stops between the armies. He gives a list, and the list is the point. Pitamaha means a father's father, the elder who held you as a child. Acharya means a teacher, one who gave you your skill. Suhrid means a well-wisher, literally a good heart, someone who wished you well without being asked. Sanjaya adds that these people stand in both armies, so no side is free of them. In Sanjaya's telling, the enemy is not a crowd of strangers. Every face has a place in Arjun's life. This is Sanjaya's report to a blind king, and the words choose their order carefully: elders first, then peers, then the young, then those linked by marriage and affection. The reason for such care is that the next verses show Arjun's mind giving way, and the reader needs to feel the weight of what he sees before he speaks. Shankara reads the sight as the ground of Arjun's attachment and confusion. Ramanuja reads it as the tenderness that stirs in Arjun and prepares the teaching to come. Madhva also treats it as the scene that sets Arjun's grief in motion.

At a village cricket match, the umpire is your uncle, the bowler your cousin, and the batsman your old schoolmate. The ball is in the air, and you cannot cheer for anyone without turning from someone you love. Arjun's field is like that, only the game is war.

1. Today, before a task you dread, such as a hard conversation or a family decision, stop for one minute and name the faces it touches. 2. Say each name quietly, or write it on paper. 3. Notice which name makes your chest tighten, and sit with that for a moment without arguing with it. 4. Then begin the task, and see whether the dread has a clearer shape than before.

A woman sits at a table in a lawyer's office where her family's land is being divided. Across from her are her uncle, who taught her to ride a bicycle, and her younger brother, who will not meet her eyes. Her hands are cold and she cannot follow the figures being read out. In that moment the verse's habit of naming each face one by one would slow things down. She could notice who is in the room and what each person once was to her, and see that the hurt she feels is the size of those bonds. Then she could ask for a pause, drink water, and breathe slowly before she answers anyone. Ordinary experience confirms that a racing body and a crowded mind make poor judges of a dispute. The verse does not tell her what to decide, does not settle the land, and does not soften the grief of seeing family on opposite sides. Where the quarrel is bitter, a lawyer or a trusted mediator is still the right help.
