Behold the Gathered Kurus

Bhagavad Gita 1.25

Meaning · English

In front of Bheeshma, Drona and all the other kings, he said: Arjun, son of Pritha, behold these Kurus gathered together.

Sanjaya reports one short sentence and the setting around it. Pramukhatah means in the presence of, literally at the face or front of someone. The elders and kings stand at the head of the armies, so the first thing before Arjuna's eyes is Bheeshma and Drona, the grandsire and the teacher. Pashya is the plain command to look. Kurus names the descendants of Kuru, the common ancestor of both sides. The word does not say enemies. It says family. Sanjaya tells the blind Dhritarashtra that the chariot-driver, placed between the armies in the previous verse, speaks these words to Arjuna. The reason is in Arjuna's own request just before: he asked to see who had come to fight. Now he is given exactly that, with the most honoured names first. The sentence asks nothing yet of Arjuna except that he look. Of the commentators, Shankara's commentary does not take up the opening chapter, so there is nothing of his here. Ramanuja reads the naming of kin as deliberate: Krishna lets Arjuna's attachment and grief rise into view so that the teaching has something real to answer.

A doctor clips the X-ray to the light box and says, look, before offering any advice. Nothing is argued yet. The picture is simply put where it cannot be avoided. The chariot between the armies is that light box, and the elders' faces are the image on it.

1. Pick one task you have been avoiding, such as a hard call, a bill or a difficult conversation. 2. Sit for two minutes and name, out loud or on paper, the actual people or things it involves. Use their names, not a vague word like situation. 3. Notice what happens in your chest or stomach as you name them. Do not fix it or judge it. 4. Then go on with your day. Seeing it clearly is the whole task for now.

A woman walks into a family meeting about dividing her late father's land. She had pictured it as paperwork. Then she sees her uncle at the head of the table, the man who taught her to ride a bicycle, and her stomach drops. This sentence speaks to that moment. The first step is not to argue or to run. It is to look at who is actually in the room and call them by the name that is true: uncle, cousin, family. Her dread then has a name and a face instead of being a fog. After that she can ask what is really being decided. Ordinary experience confirms that a problem looks different once its people are seen clearly rather than imagined. The sentence does not promise that the meeting will go well, that the grief of the family quarrel will lessen, or that she will know what to do next. It only brings the scene into view. Anyone sleepless, panicking or unwell from such a moment should also talk to a doctor or someone they trust.
