Bhagavad Gita 1.24
Meaning · English
Sanjaya said: Thus addressed by Gudakesha, the conqueror of sleep, O descendant of Bharat, Hrishikesha, the Lord of the senses, drew the magnificent chariot up and set it between the two armies.
Two titles carry most of the weight. Hrishikesha joins hrishika, the senses, with isha, lord: Krishna is named as the master of the senses. Gudakesha means one who has conquered guda, sleep, which is Arjuna's title for being alert and unslumbering. So the master of the senses is taking orders from the one who is wide awake. Bharata is how Sanjaya addresses the blind king Dhritarashtra, calling him a descendant of Bharat. The ratha-uttama is the magnificent chariot, the best of its kind. Sanjaya reports a plain event: Arjuna spoke, and Krishna drew the chariot up and halted it between the two armies. The reason it is told this way is that Dhritarashtra asked what his sons and the Pandavas were doing, and Sanjaya answers with what he sees, in order. This is Sanjaya's account, not yet any teaching. Ramanuja's reading draws attention to the Lord of all taking the driver's seat at a devotee's word. Shankara's surviving commentary passes over this opening scene and begins later, at the point where the teaching starts. Nothing in the verse itself says how Arjuna feels.
A taxi driver pulls over exactly where the passenger points, on a road with long lines of waiting traffic on either side, and leaves the engine running. The passenger has chosen the spot, the driver holds the wheel steady, and the halt between the two lines is where the journey pauses.
1. Pick one task today that you are slightly dreading, such as a phone call or a talk with a relative. 2. Before you begin, stop for one minute, wherever you are, and do nothing else. 3. Notice where the dread sits in your body: chest, stomach, hands. 4. Then start the task, and afterwards note whether the pause changed anything.
A man drives his father to the cancer clinic for the first appointment. At the hospital gate he stops the car before turning in, engine still running, hands on the wheel. His pulse is quick and his mouth is dry. In that stop, the verse shows a driver who halts the chariot where he is asked and stays steady between two sides. The man can do something small like it. He lets the car stand a minute, breathes out slowly a few times, and notices what he feels instead of pushing it away. Then he asks his father if he is ready, and drives in. Ordinary experience bears this out: a short pause before a hard thing often steadies the body, and slow breathing can settle a racing heart. The verse does not promise that the appointment will go well, and it does not take away fear or grief. It is also no substitute for the doctor who is waiting inside. It is only a picture of a halt, held with a steady hand, before the hard thing is faced.
