Hearing and Seeing Good

Rig Veda 1.89.8

Meaning · English

Gods, may our ears hear good; gods of worship, may our eyes see good. Firm in limb and body, praising you, may we reach the span the gods have set.

The prayer asks for three things: ears that hear good, eyes that see good, and a body steady enough to keep praising until its span is reached. The word for good means what is fair and worth turning toward. Sāyaṇa adds a plain sense: that we never go deaf or lose our sight. The span of life is the one the gods have set. Sāyaṇa names Prajāpati, the lord of creatures, and counts it at well over a hundred years. The praising runs through all of those years.

1. Sit upright before you open your book, body still and steady, eyes open on the page or the room. 2. Say the mantra once, aloud or under your breath, as a request made to all the gods. 3. Listen. Notice what reaches your ears, and hold the words you are about to study as what you are asking to hear well. 4. Look. Rest your eyes on what is in front of you, the page and the light on it, as what you asked to see. 5. When the mind drifts, come back to your ears, your eyes and the steadiness of your limbs. 6. Stop when the minutes end, and say the mantra again when your study is done.
