What Remains Full
Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 5.1.1
Meaning · English
That is full. This is full. From the full, the full rises. When the full is taken from the full, the full alone remains.
Two things are pointed at. 'That' is what lies beyond sight. 'This' is what is here. Each is called full, meaning nothing is missing from it. Then comes a picture. The full rises out of the full, and when the full is taken out of the full, the full is still left. Ordinary sums do not work this way. What lacks nothing cannot be made less. Śaṅkara reads 'that' as the unseen ground and 'this' as the world of name and form, though the words name neither.
1. Sit where you study, before you open the book, with your back easy. 2. Say the line once, slowly, aloud or under your breath. 3. Rest your attention on what is here: the room, your body, the sound of your voice. Let the word full rest on it. 4. Turn toward what lies beyond what you can see, and let the same word rest there. 5. When the mind wanders, notice that the wandering took nothing away, and say the line again. 6. Stop when the time is up and begin your study. Say the line once more when you close the book.
