From Darkness to Light
Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 1.3.28
Meaning · English
From the unreal lead me to the real. From darkness lead me to light. From death lead me to the deathless.
There are three requests, and each has the same shape: take me away from one thing and toward another. The unreal is what seems solid but does not last. The real is what truly is. Darkness is not seeing, and light is seeing clearly. Death is the end that waits for every body. The deathless is what that end cannot touch. The verb is lead, so the speaker asks to be taken there, not to get there alone. No guide is named. The Upanishad itself reads all three pairs as one: from death to the deathless.
1. Sit where you study, before you open the book. Keep your back easy and your eyes lowered. 2. Say the first line softly, barely aloud, the way it was first said beneath another's song. Hold its two sides in mind: what does not last, and what is. 3. Pause. Then say the second line, and after another pause, the third. Let each pair stand in your attention before you go on. 4. When the mind drifts, return to the line you were on and say it again, softly. 5. Stop when the study begins. Say the three lines once more when it ends.
