Studying Together Without Resentment
Taittiriya Upanishad 2.1
Meaning · English
Together may it guard us both; together may it feed us both. May we work with vigour together. May our study shine. May we not resent each other.
Teacher and student speak as one, using a grammatical form that means 'us two'. They ask an unnamed power to guard them both and to feed them both. Commentators name that power as the Lord, the reality the study is about. Then the two turn to their own part: to put strength into the work together, and to let what they learn be bright, not dull. The last line names the risk in any teaching, that the two grow to resent each other. They ask that it not happen.
1. Sit facing the person you study with, or, if you study alone, with the text open in front of you. Say the chant aloud, together if you can. 2. As you say 'together', hold the other person in mind. The request is made for both of you. 3. On the line about vigour, name to yourself the work you are about to do, and begin it with full effort. 4. When impatience or judgement of the other arises, return to the last line and say it again quietly. 5. When the lesson ends, say the whole chant once more, and stop.
