The story · English

The Purana opens with a bow. Salutation to Vasudeva. Victory to you, Pundarikasha, origin of the universe. Hrishikesha, great Purusha, first born. This Vishnu is eternal and does not decay. He is Brahma, the Isvara and the Purusha. He brings about the creation of the world, its keeping, and its dissolution, and from him the cosmos sprang, with Pradhana, Buddhi and the rest. The teller prays that he grant us good understanding, wealth and freedom. Then, bowing to Vishnu, to Brahma and the others, and to his own teacher, he says he will recite the Purana that is equal to the Vedas. He turns to Parasara, best of ascetics, son of Vasishtha's son, learned in the Vedas and the scriptures. Parasara had just finished his first devotions of the day.

Maitreya came to him and spoke. "Teacher, I have studied all the scriptures and the Vedas with their branches under you. By your grace, even those who dislike me admit that I have mastered every branch of knowledge. Now I want to hear from you how this universe came to be, and how it will be in the future. What is it made of? Where did moving and unmoving things come from? Where did it rest at first, and where will it dissolve? Tell me of the gods, the seas, the mountains and the earth, the sun and its measure. Tell me of the Manus, the Manwantaras, the Kalpas and the four Yugas, and how a Kalpa ends. Tell me of the sages and kings, how Vyasa divided the Vedas, and the duties of Brahmanas and householders. Incline your mind to me, so that I may know all this."

Parasara answered, "Well said, Maitreya. You remind me of what my grandfather Vasishtha told me long ago. When I heard that my father had been devoured by a Rakshasa sent by Visvamitra, I was filled with terrible rage. I set out to destroy the Rakshasas with a sacrifice, and in that sacrifice I burned hundreds of those night-rangers to ashes. As they were being wiped out, my grandfather Vasishtha, a deeply good man, spoke to me. 'Child, do not give in to such fury. Hold back this anger. The Rakshasas did this to your father, yet they have not truly sinned.'

"'Anger rises in fools. Where is it in the wise? Who really destroys whom? People only reap their own acts. Anger cuts down the great and hard-won gains of ascetic practice and fame. The early saints always cast it away, for it blocks heaven and freedom. So do not fall under its power. There is no need to burn the night-rangers, who have done no wrong. Stop this sacrifice. Good people are made of forgiveness.' Out of respect for my grandfather's words, I stopped the sacrifice. Vasishtha was pleased. Then Pulastya, son of Brahma, arrived. Vasishtha offered him arghya, and Pulastya sat down.

Pulastya, elder brother of Pulaha, said to me, 'Though you have a great enmity with the Rakshasas, you chose forgiveness when your elder told you to. So you will master every branch of knowledge. And though you were furious, you did not wipe out my sons, so I give you a great boon. You will be the author of the Purana and the Samhita. You will know the celestials fully. By my grace, child, your mind will be clear and unclouded about the present and the past.' Vasishtha added, 'What Pulastya has said to you must come true.' Parasara ended, "Because you asked, I remember everything Vasishtha and Pulastya told me. I will now tell you the Purana Samhita in full. Understand it well. This universe has sprung from Vishnu, and in him it is established. He is the cause of its creation, its keeping and its destruction, and he is the universe."
