Life Ripens Like Grain

Katha Upanishad 1.1.6

Meaning · English

Look back at how those before us lived, and look ahead to how those after us will live. A mortal ripens like grain and is cut down. Like grain, he springs up again.

Nachiketa is speaking to his father, and he asks him to look in two directions. Anupasya is to look along the line behind you, following it back. Pratipasya is to look toward what faces you, the line ahead. Behind are the forefathers and how they behaved. Ahead are the people still to come. Martya, the word for a human being, means one who dies. Pacyate comes from a root meaning to cook or ripen, so a person is said to ripen the way standing grain does. Sasya is that grain, the crop in the field. Ajayate means is born, and the text says the mortal is born again, as the grain is. The reason is the boy's situation. His father has promised to give away all he owns, and the boy asks to whom he will be given. His answer turns the father's eyes to the generations on either side. Those before held to what they said. Those after will learn from what is done now. A life is short, ripens and is cut, so little is gained by going back on a promise. Shankara reads it in this way: the example of good people of the past is the measure for truthfulness, and the brevity of life gives no reason to abandon it.

A stone staircase in an old temple or school has a dip worn into the middle of each step. Countless feet before you made it, and yours will deepen it for those who climb later. You stand between the lower steps and the upper ones. One person's passing is small, and what they did with each step stays in the stone.

1. Tonight, before sleep, spend two minutes recalling one person from your family or neighbourhood, now gone, whose word could be trusted. Note exactly what they did that earned it. 2. Then think of one small promise you made this week, even a casual one such as returning a call or an item. 3. Tomorrow, keep that promise at the time you said, and notice what it costs and what it settles.

A man sits in his late father's shop, going through an old ledger. On one page is a loan his father promised to repay a neighbour, never marked as settled. No one else knows of it. The neighbour has not asked. He could close the book. The verse puts him between two lines of people. Behind him are those who kept faith when no one was watching, and he knows his father was one of them. Ahead are his own children, who will learn from what he does with this page. The text adds that a mortal ripens like grain and is born again, so the choice is not made for one short season only. He might go to the neighbour with the figure and ask how it should be settled. Ordinary experience confirms that we tend to keep our word more easily when we remember who taught us to. The verse does not make the sum smaller, ease his grief for his father, or tell him how the neighbour will take it. It points him to the generations on either side.
