Meaning · English

Mitra, Varuna, Aryaman, Indra, Brihaspati, wide-striding Vishnu: be kind to us. Honour to Brahman. Vayu, you are visible Brahman. I will speak right and truth. Guard me; guard the speaker.

It begins by asking six gods of the old Vedic world to be kind to the class. Then it bows to Brahman, the reality underneath everything. Vayu, the wind and the breath, is called the one form of Brahman that can actually be sensed. The teacher promises two things: to speak what is right, what fits the order of things, and what is true, what matches what is so. Last, he asks that this keep both the student and the teacher safe.

Think of a sheet on a washing line lifting in a breeze. Nobody sees the wind itself, only what it moves, yet no one doubts it is there. The teacher points to Vayu the same way: the one face of Brahman close enough to feel on the skin and in every breath.
