Six Parts of Pronunciation
Taittiriya Upanishad 1.2.1
ॐ शीक्षां व्याख्यास्यामः । वर्णः स्वरः । मात्रा बलम् । साम सन्तानः । इत्युक्तः शीक्षाध्यायः
Meaning · English
Om. We will now explain the study of sound: the letter, the pitch, the length, the effort, the evenness, and the joining. That completes the chapter on pronunciation.
The teacher names six things to get right when reciting. Letter: each sound formed cleanly. Pitch: whether a syllable is raised, lowered, or slides between the two. Length: short, long, or drawn out. Effort: how much breath and force a sound takes. Evenness: a steady delivery, neither rushed nor dragged. Joining: how the end of one word blends into the start of the next. The closing line declares the lesson complete, so the list itself is the lesson.
Picture someone reading a phone number aloud. Every digit can be right, but a pause in the wrong place or two numbers slurred together sends the call to a stranger. These texts were passed from mouth to ear, with no page to check. So pitch, length and joining mattered as much as the letters themselves.
