Meaning · English

Bring me the good fortune that brings, spreads and soon provides my clothes, cows, food and drink always, with woolly flocks. May students come from every side, disciplined and calm.

The teacher asks for fortune, pictured as a goddess who arrives, spreads her gifts wide and quickly settles them on him for good. What he names is ordinary: clothes, cattle, food and drink, and sheep for wool. Then come five short lines, each closed with the call spoken as an offering goes into the fire. Let students come. Let them come from different places. Let them come forward. Let them hold themselves in check. Let them be at peace. He asks for good students, not only many of them.

Picture a family that takes in boarders at the start of term. The spare beds are made, extra blankets folded, the pantry stocked with rice and milk. Only then do they hope the right lodgers knock: quiet, steady people who will keep the house peaceful. The teacher prays in that order. First the supplies, then the students, and students of good temper.
