May I be honored among people, above the wealthy. Giver of fortune, let me enter you, and you enter me. As water runs downhill, may students come to me.
The teacher asks to be well regarded among people, above the wealthy. Then he turns to the giver of good fortune and asks that each enter the other: he into the god, the god into him. He calls the god thousand-branched, a place to wash himself clean. He wants students to arrive from every side, as steadily as months pass into the year. He closes by calling the god a close neighbor: shine on me, come to me. Each line ends with the call made as an offering is poured into fire.
Drop a dry sponge into a bucket of water. The sponge sinks into the water, and at the same moment the water soaks into the sponge. It is hard to say which one entered which. That is the teacher's wish toward the giver of fortune: not a gift handed across, but a meeting where each fills the other.
