Meaning · English

Bhur, bhuvah, suvah: the three utterances. Mahachamasya named a fourth, mahah. That is Brahman, the self, with the other gods as limbs. Bhur is this world, bhuvah the air, suvah the heavens.

Three short words are chanted at the start of Vedic rites: bhur, bhuvah, suvah. A teacher named Mahachamasya made known a fourth, mahah, which means greatness. Mahah is Brahman, the reality behind everything. It is also called the self, the main body that holds the rest together. The other gods are its limbs. They are real, but they belong to it. The first three words are then matched to three levels of the world: the ground underfoot, the air above it, and the heavens beyond.

Picture a tree in winter, bare enough to see its whole shape. The branches spread in different directions, each with its own bends, but every one draws its sap from the trunk and would wither if cut away. Mahah is the trunk. Bhur, bhuvah, suvah and the gods tied to them are the branches.
