Hatha Yoga Pradipika 1.1

श्रीआदिनाथाय नमोऽस्तु तस्मै येनोपदिष्टा हठयोगविद्या। विभ्राजते प्रोन्नतराजयोगम् आरोढुं इच्छोरधिरोहिणीव ॥

Meaning · English

Homage to that glorious first lord, Adinatha, by whom the knowledge of hatha yoga was taught. It shines like a flight of stairs for one who wishes to climb to the very high raja yoga.

The book opens with a bow. Sri is a mark of honour, and Adinatha means 'the first lord'. The Pradipika names him as the one who first taught hatha yoga. The commentary reads him as Shiva, who is said to have given this teaching to Girija, the mountain's daughter, Parvati. So the text places itself in a line of teaching that begins with a god and does not claim to be Svatmarama's own invention. Next, the term hatha yoga vidya: vidya is knowledge, yoga is union or practice, and hatha is the discipline of effort. The commentary adds its own reading of the syllable pair ha and tha, taking them as sun and moon, and hatha yoga as the joining of the two breaths, prana and apana. That is the commentary's gloss, drawn from another work, not something the verse itself says. Then comes the image. Raja yoga is called very high, like a tall palace or a lofty roof. Raja yoga means the royal yoga, the stilling of the mind itself. Hatha yoga is the adhirohini, a ladder or staircase for someone who wants to climb there. The commentary draws out the point: a person who wants to reach a high building does it more easily by stairs. The reason the text gives is simple. Hatha is not the goal. It is a means, and the verse says so in its first line of teaching. What it asks of the practitioner is a wish to climb. The stairs shine only for someone who intends to go up them.

A woman sits through a long evening of work, stiff in the shoulders, and takes up a few postures and slow breaths because she wants a calmer mind, not a more flexible body. That is close to the verse's own picture: the body practice is a stair, and the quiet mind is the room upstairs. Today's mainstream understanding agrees with part of this. Regular movement and slow, steady breathing are widely accepted as helping people feel less tense and sleep a little better, and a good family doctor would say so in general terms. Attention trained through such practice is also taken seriously in psychology. What has no modern evidence is the tradition's own account: that these methods lead to raja yoga, a complete stilling of the mind, or that the sun and moon breaths unite. These are the text's claims and a way of describing experience, not physiology. The claim that Shiva taught the system to Parvati is a matter of faith and lineage, not of history that can be checked. The text also cannot be followed literally in every part, since later verses describe demanding methods that could harm someone without guidance.
