Hatha Yoga Pradipika 1.5

Meaning · English

The glorious Adinatha; Matsyendra; Shabara; Ananda and Bhairava; Chaurangi; Mina; Goraksha; Virupaksha; and Bileshaya, the dweller in the hole.

The verse is a list of names and nothing else. It has no instruction and no claim, only people. The Pradipika gives the teachers of hatha in order, with Adinatha, the first lord, at the head. Verse 1.4 has already said that Matsyendra, Goraksha and others knew this knowledge, and this verse and the next two spell out who they were. Some names can be taken apart. Chaurangi means one whose four limbs were cut away. Mina means fish. Bileshaya means one who lies in a hole, a cave dweller. Ananda and Bhairava may be two names or one. The commentary reads them as one man, Anandabhairava, and calls Shabara another perfected master, a siddha. The commentary also tells a story, and it is the commentary's own. Matsyendra, wandering the earth after receiving yoga from Adinatha, glanced with kindness on a limbless man in a forest, and hands and feet grew. The man bowed, asked for his grace, was accepted, and became the siddha known as Chaurangi. The commentary says Mina is Minanatha and Goraksha is Gorakshanatha. Why list names at all? The text rests its authority on an unbroken line of teachers, not on Svatmarama's own word. A practitioner is asked to see the method as handed down, not invented.

Picture a woman in a yoga studio reading a framed chart of teachers that runs back several generations. She wonders how much of it can be checked. Today's historians generally treat the Nath masters as real traditions, though they find little firm record of the individual lives, and stories like Chaurangi's limbs regrowing are devotional accounts, not history. Nothing in modern physiology bears on a list of names. What does carry over is plainer. People learn physical skills best from a teacher who can see them, and a named lineage tells you where a method claims to come from. It does not tell you whether the method suits your body. The hatha manuals of the sixteenth century were written for people living near a teacher, often in a hut or cave. Today the useful part of the verse is the habit of asking where a practice comes from, and who is there to correct you.
