Sweet in His Hand

Ganesha Pancharatnam 1

Meaning · English

Gladly holding a sweet, always bringing freedom, crowned with the moon, protector of those who delight in him, lord of the lordless, slayer of the elephant-demon, quick to clear misfortune from those who bow. I bow to Vinayaka.

The hymn opens with Ganesha holding a sweet, and holding it gladly. The one with that small treat in his hand is also the one who brings freedom, and the line says he does this always, not now and then. The moon sits on his head as an ornament. He protects those who delight in him, and he is the one leader for those who have nobody else to lead them. He is the one who destroyed the elephant-demon. For anyone who bows, he clears bad fortune quickly. Only after all that does the singer say: I bow to him.

Picture a grandparent at the door with a sweet already in hand, waiting for a child running up the path. Nothing has to be fetched; the treat is there before the child arrives. Ganesha is held up the same way: the sweet in his hand and the freedom he brings are both always ready, never put away for later.
