Lifted Out of Trouble

Ganesha Pancharatnam 2

Meaning · English

Dreadful to those who will not bow, bright as the rising sun, he lifts the bowed from deep trouble. Lord of gods, treasures and hosts, I shelter in him always.

The same presence means two things, depending on who stands before it. To someone who refuses to bow, he is frightening. To someone who bows, he is the one who pulls them out of trouble too heavy to carry alone. He glows like a sun just clearing the horizon. Gods bow to him, and so do their enemies. Then comes a run of titles: lord of the gods, of riches, of elephants, of his own band of followers. The poet ends plainly: he is the one I lean on, without a break.

Picture a lifeguard on a bright beach. To a swimmer showing off past the flags, his whistle is a warning and a nuisance. To a swimmer caught in a current, the same man is the arm under the shoulders, hauling them back to shore. One person, two experiences. The difference is whether the swimmer reaches for him.
