Good to every world, he threw down the elephant-demon. Big-bellied, elephant-faced, unfading. Maker of mercy, patience, joy, good name, clear mind. Radiant, bowed to by all, I bow.

The heart of it is a row of five words that all end the same way, each meaning 'the one who makes'. He makes mercy, which is kindness to people who have not earned it. He makes patience, the forgiving kind that does not keep score. He makes joy. He makes a good name. And he makes the mind, giving it shape and steadiness. Around that row sit his plain features: the big belly, the elephant face, and that he does not wear away. Even the great bow to him.

A tap in a village courtyard. One woman fills a pot for cooking, a boy rinses his feet, someone waters a tulsi plant, an old man drinks from cupped hands. Nobody brings their own water. They only bring a vessel. The five gifts work like that: mercy, patience, joy, good name and a clear mind, all drawn from one place.

सब लोकों का भला करने वाले, उन्होंने गजासुर को मार गिराया। बड़े पेट वाले, हाथी के मुख वाले, कभी न मिटने वाले। दया, धीरज, आनंद, अच्छे नाम और निर्मल मन को रचने वाले। तेजस्वी, जिन्हें सब प्रणाम करते हैं, उन्हें मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ।
