Meaning · English

He wipes away the grief of those with nothing, keeper of ancient words, Shiva's elder son, grinder of demon pride, fearsome at world's end, adorned with Dhananjaya and other serpents, his cheeks flowing with musth. I worship the ancient elephant.

Those with nothing come first: he wipes away their distress. He is the one the oldest sayings speak of. He is the elder son of Shiva, named here as the enemy of the cities. He chews up the pride of those who war on the gods, and he is fearsome when the world is undone. Dhananjaya and other serpents are his ornaments; this Dhananjaya is a serpent king, not Arjuna. His cheeks flow, as a great elephant's do, and the word for that flow also means gift. Then the plain close: I worship the ancient elephant.

A child stands at a sweet stall with empty pockets, just looking. The vendor wraps a laddu and hands it over without asking for a coin. The sweet never depended on what the child brought. That is the first name given here: his help reaches the ones who have nothing to offer for it.
