नितान्तकान्तदन्तकान्तिमन्तकान्तकात्मजम् अचिन्त्यरूपमन्तहीनमन्तरायकृन्तनम् । हृदन्तरे निरन्तरं वसन्तमेव योगिनां तमेकदन्तमेव तं विचिन्तयामि सन्ततम्

Meaning · English

I think always of the one-tusked one: his tusk shining, son of Death's conqueror, beyond thought and without end, who cuts through obstacles and lives always in yogis' hearts.

The poet describes a tusk with a deep, lovely gleam. Then he names Ganesha's father by a striking title: the one who put an end to Death. The son himself is called beyond thought, with no edge or end to him, and the one who cuts obstacles away. Yet this limitless one has an address. He lives without a break in the hearts of yogis. So the poet sets everything else aside and holds just this one-tusked figure in mind, all the time.

Set a small bowl of water outside on a clear night and the full moon sits in it, whole. The bowl does not contain the moon, and the moon is not made smaller. A form too vast to think about can still be found complete in a quiet heart. The yogis' steady remembering is what keeps the water still enough to show it.

मैं सदा उस एकदंत का ध्यान करता हूँ, जिसका दाँत दमकता है, जो मृत्यु को जीतने वाले का पुत्र है, जो विचार से परे और अनंत है, जो विघ्नों को काट देता है और सदा योगियों के हृदय में बसता है।

कवि एक ऐसे दाँत का वर्णन करता है जिसमें गहरी, सुंदर चमक है। फिर वह गणेश के पिता को एक अनोखी उपाधि से पुकारता है: वह जिसने मृत्यु का अंत कर दिया। स्वयं पुत्र को विचार से परे कहा गया है, जिसकी न कोई सीमा है न अंत, और जो विघ्नों को काटकर हटा देता है। फिर भी इस असीम का एक ठिकाना है। वह बिना रुके योगियों के हृदय में बसता है। इसलिए कवि बाकी सब कुछ एक ओर रख देता है और हर समय केवल इसी एकदंत रूप को मन में धारण करता है।

किसी साफ़ रात में पानी का एक छोटा कटोरा बाहर रख दो, तो पूर्णिमा का चाँद उसमें पूरा का पूरा आ बैठता है। कटोरा चाँद को समेटता नहीं, और चाँद छोटा भी नहीं होता। जो रूप सोचने के लिए बहुत विशाल है, वह भी किसी शांत हृदय में पूरा मिल सकता है। योगियों का अटल स्मरण ही पानी को इतना स्थिर रखता है कि वह उसे दिखा सके।
