Why Shivaratri, and the Five Deeds

Shiva Purana 1.9

The story · English

Nandikeshvara tells it. After the battle, Brahma and Vishnu stood quietly on either side of the Lord, palms joined. They seated Shiva and his family on a fine seat and worshipped him with everything worthy of a master: necklaces, anklets, armlets, crowns, jewelled earrings, sacred thread, garlands, silk, flowers, betel, camphor, sandalwood paste, incense, lamps, a white umbrella, fans, banners, whisks, and gifts beyond speech. Shiva, pleased, gave the best of those offerings back to the assembly, one by one in order, and there was a great uproar as people took them. Smiling, he spoke to the two bowed sons: "I am pleased with you today. This great day will now be holier still. It will be known as Shivaratri, a night dear to me."

Shiva went on: "Whoever worships my linga or my image on this night does the work of the world: its keeping, its making, and the rest. Whoever fasts through the day and night, master of the senses, and worships honestly and as well as they are able, gains at once the fruit of a full year of my worship. This is when my dharma grows, as the sea swells under the moon." He named another time: the month of Margashirsha, under the star Ardra, when he first appeared as a pillar. To see him then, with Uma, as linga or image, makes one dear to him as his son Guha is. Worship brings a fruit beyond words. Here, on this battlefield, he rose as a linga, so this is the linga's place.

"This pillar, without beginning or end, will become small as an atom, so that the world may see and worship. It gives enjoyment and liberation; seeing, touching, or meditating on it frees creatures from birth. Because it rose like a mountain of fire, it will be called Arunachala. Pilgrim waters will gather here. Living or dying here brings freedom; gifts, offerings and prayers are multiplied ten million times; even remembering this place frees the embodied. Worship me in the linga and you receive five fruits: nearness to me, a place with me, my form, my powers, and union with me. All of you will soon have your wishes." Then he raised the fallen armies of both sides with a rain of nectar, and, to clear their folly and enmity, he spoke.

"I have two forms, with parts and without parts, and no one else has either. So no one else is truly lord. I appeared first as the pillar, then in this form. The formless is called Brahman; the formed is called Ishvara. Both are mine alone, so neither of you is lord. Your pride in thinking so came from ignorance, and I rose on this battlefield to end it. Give up that pride and turn your minds to me. Honour this linga daily; where anyone sets up my linga, I am present." Brahma and Vishnu then asked him to describe his five deeds. Shiva said: "Creation, preservation, destruction, concealment and grace. The first four stir up the world; the fifth gives liberation. Earth creates, water sustains, fire destroys, air hides, and sky shows grace. I have five faces to carry them."

"You two won creation and preservation by your austerity. Rudra and Maheshvara hold the other two. But you forgot this, and so grew foolish. To remember me, repeat the mantra Om." Om, he said, first came from his mouth, and from it came the five-syllable mantra, the Vedas, and millions of mantras. Behind a curtain, with his hand on their heads as they faced north, he gave them the mantra, saying it three times. They offered themselves to their guru and praised him: "Salutations to you, formless and formed, lord of all, who bears five faces." Shiva said: "Chant Om. Worship the linga with Om and the image with the five-syllable mantra, especially on the fourteenth night under Ardra." Having taught them, Shiva vanished there.
