The story · English
Nandikeshvara tells it. Then Mahadeva made a man, a strange and wonderful being, out of the middle of his brow. He named him Bhairava, and made him for one purpose: to destroy Brahma's pride. Bhairava bowed to his lord in the courtyard. He asked, "What work shall I do here? Command me quickly, master." Shiva answered him as a father speaks to a son. "Child, this is Brahma himself, the first god of the worlds. Honour him now with the sword, sharp and swift." Bhairava took hold of Brahma's hair with one hand. He took the fifth head, the proud one, the one that had spoken falsely. He raised his sword and shook it, plain for all to see, ready to cut the heads away and kill.
And Brahma, your father, fell apart in fear. His ornaments, his robes, his garland and his cloth slipped from him, and his clean hair came loose. He shook like a vine in a strong wind, and he dropped at the lotus feet of Bhairava. Meanwhile Achyuta, who is Vishnu, wanted to look upon Brahma, and he was moved with pity. He wet the soft feet of our lord with his tears, and with his hands joined he spoke, the way a small child speaks to its father. "Long ago you gave Brahma this fifth head, with great effort," he said. "It is the sign of your own lordship. So forgive him now. He deserves your mercy. Show your favour to this Brahma."
Shiva was pleased by Achyuta's plea. There in the courtyard of the gods he called Bhairava back, and Bhairava held the sword from Brahma's neck. Then the god spoke to Brahma, the cheat, whose proud head was gone. "Brahma, you wanted honour, and you claimed to be lord. You are a liar. So you will have no honour in the world. No festival will be held for you, no temple set up in your name." Brahma answered, "Be gracious, master, great lord, giver of boons. To be freed from losing my head, I count that as my boon." He added, "I bow to you, kinsman of the world, source of all things, Shambhu, who bears the mountain bow, who forgives every fault."
Ishvara said, "Without a ruler, this whole world would not last. So strike whoever deserves the rod, and carry the burden of the world, child." Then he said, "I will give you a boon, rare and great. At the great sacrifices and the household rites, you will be the teacher. Without you, a sacrifice bears no fruit, however complete, however rich its fees." Then the god turned to Ketaka, the flower that had stood as a false witness. "You, Ketaka, are wicked and false. Go far from here. I will take no delight in you. Let there be no worship with you from now on." At these words, the families of the gods kept Ketaka away from Shiva's side, on every side.
Ketaka spoke. "I bow to you, lord. By your command my birth is fruitless. Make it fruitful, father, and forgive my fault. Your memory destroys sin, done knowingly or not. Seeing you, how could a false fault remain in me?" Before the assembly, the lord was praised by Ketaka. He said, "Wearing you is not right for me. I am Ishvara, and my word is true. But those who are mine will wear you, and your birth will be fruitful. You will be above me as a canopy." So the lord showed grace to Ketaka, to Brahma and to Madhava. He shone in the middle of the assembly, praised by all the gods.
