Ishvara, the Lord, spoke to the gods gathered around him. He asked them, "Children, are you well? Does the world go on by my command? Do the families of the gods keep to their own work, or not?" Then he said that he already knew of the war between Brahma and Vishnu. It had been told to him again and again, he said, by the sorrow of those who came to him. He spoke this with a smile, in gentle words, as one speaks to children. The husband of the Mother pleased the host of gods, and the Mother herself was pleased. Then the Lord of Hari and Brahma chose to go to the battlefield. He ordered a hundred leaders of his hosts to come at once, there in the assembly.

Many kinds of music sounded for the journey of the Supreme Lord. His leaders stood ready, each with his own mount and ornaments. The Lord of the Mother climbed into a chariot shaped like the sacred syllable Om, made with five circles from end to end. Indra and all the other gods followed, with the Lord's sons and his hosts. There were banners, fans, flowers raining down, and dancers, and bands of musicians. Pashupati, honored by the Goddess beside him, came with his army to the place where the two fought. He did not show himself. He hid in the clouds and watched the battle, and his music and his great host fell silent.

Brahma and Achyuta, both proud warriors, each wanted to kill the other. They used the weapon of Maheshvara and the weapon of Pashupati. The flames of those weapons burned all three worlds. Ishvara saw it, an untimely end of the world, and he took the form of a vast pillar of fire, terrible to see, with himself in its middle, beyond all form. Both weapons, ready to destroy the worlds, fell at once when the great fire appeared. The two looked at this wonder, which had quieted their weapons, and asked each other what it could be. They said it was beyond the senses, a pillar of fire, and that they must find its top and its bottom. Each thought himself a hero. They agreed to search.

Vishnu said that they could not do the same work together. So he took the body of a boar and went down to find the pillar's beginning. Brahma took the body of a swan and went up to find its end. Hari broke through the underworld and went very far down. He never saw where the shining pillar stood. Worn out, still a boar, he came back to the battlefield. Brahma, your father, flew on through the sky. He saw a ketaki flower, lovely and unfaded, that had fallen from above long ago. The Lord had watched all they did, and he shook his head with laughter. Brahma asked the flower why it was falling and who had held it.

The flower answered that it had fallen for a long time from the middle of the pillar. Brahma told it to give up hope of seeing the end. He said he had come as a swan to serve the pillar. He asked the flower to speak for him before Vishnu and say that Brahma had seen the top. He bowed to it, saying that even a lie is praised in need. He went to Vishnu, who was tired and without hope. Brahma danced with joy and said the flower was his witness. The flower said it was true. Vishnu believed it and worshipped Brahma with sixteen offerings. Then Ishvara took form from the fire to punish the liar. Vishnu, trembling, took hold of his feet. He asked for mercy. Ishvara said, "Because you wanted lordship and still spoke the truth, you will be my equal among the people, and you will have worship and festivals of your own." He gave Hari equality with himself as the gods watched.
