Brahma and Vishnu Quarrel
Shiva Purana 1.6
The story · English
Nandikeshvara spoke. Once, long ago, Vishnu lay asleep on his serpent couch, in great splendor, with his own attendants gathered around him. Brahma, the best of those who know Brahman, happened to come by. He saw the lotus-eyed one lying on that beautiful bed, and he asked him, "Who are you, lying here like any man, proud, even when you see me? Get up, child. Look at me. Your master has come." He added that anyone who acts proud before a teacher who has come to be honored deserves a penance, being a fool.
Hearing this, Vishnu grew angry, but outwardly he stayed calm. "Welcome, child," he said. "Be well. Sit here on this seat." Then he asked, "Why does your face look like a tiger's, and your eyes so uneven?" Brahma answered, "Child Vishnu, great pride has come over you, driven by time. I am the grandfather of the world, and its protector, and yours." Vishnu replied, "This whole world rests in me. You speak as if you were a thief claiming it. You were born from the lotus of my navel. You are my son, and you talk in vain."
So the two deluded unborn ones went on, each saying, "I am the better, not you. I am the master." Wanting to kill each other, they prepared for battle. The two immortal heroes fought, one riding the swan, the other the king of birds, and their followers fought as well. Gods of every kind came in their flying chariots to watch this great and terrible wonder, scattering flowers from the sky. Vishnu, furious, loosed unbearable arrows and many weapons at Brahma's chest. Brahma, equally furious, sent blazing arrows and weapons into Vishnu's chest, again and again.
The gods watched and spoke in great distress. Then Vishnu, wild with anger, breathing hard, took up the Maheshvara weapon against Brahma. Brahma, shaking the whole universe with his rage, set the dreadful Pashupata weapon against Vishnu's chest. Both weapons rose into the sky, bright as ten thousand suns, thousand-faced, fierce, terrible as a raging storm. The gods, troubled, said to one another, like subjects when a kingdom is shaken, that creation, preservation, destruction, concealment and grace all come from him, the supreme Brahman, the one with the trident. Without his grace, not even a blade of grass could be destroyed.
Their fear eased, the gods went looking for Shiva's dwelling and reached the peak of Kailasa, where the moon-crested lord lives. Seeing the supreme abode, they were glad. They bowed to it, entered the house, and in the hall's center, on a jeweled seat, they saw the best of gods shining beside Uma, served by his attendants, fanned by devoted women, praised by the Vedas, granting grace. Their eyes filled with tears of joy, and the great gods bowed full length from afar. Seeing them, the lord called them near with his attendants. Delighting them, the crest-jewel of the gods spoke words deep in meaning and sweet with blessing.
